[Main Composition] Flunixin meglumine

[Description] This drug is a clear, colorless or light yellow liquid.

[Pharmacological Actions] Pharmacodynamics: Flunixin meglumine is a potent cyclooxygenase inhibitor, exhibiting analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-rheumatic properties. The analgesic effect is mediated through inhibiting the synthesis of both (or each of) prostaglandin and its pro-algesic mediators in peripheral tissues, thereby blocking the transmission of pain impulses. The anti-inflammatory effect in peripheral tissues is attributed to suppression of cyclooxygenase activity, decreased production of prostaglandin precursors as well as inhibition of other inflammatory mediators involved in the induction of local inflammatory responses.

Pharmacokinetics: Following a single intramuscular administration of 2.2 mg/kg body weight to pigs, the drug shows a plasma elimination half-life of 3-4 h, peak plasma concentration of 2.94 μg/mL, and time to peak of 0.4 h, and the drug remains detectable in blood for at least 18 hours post-dosing. Additional pharmacokinetic characteristics include the apparent volume of distribution of 2.0 L/kg, and the bioavailability of a single cervical intramuscular injection of 87%.

[Drug Interactions] (1) Flunixin meglumine must not be co-administered with other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs due to the potentiation of gastrointestinal toxicity, including gastric ulceration and hemorrhage.

(2) Due to its high plasma protein binding affinity, flunixin meglumine may displace other drugs that bind to plasma proteins or be displaced by co-administered drugs, resulting in enhanced pharmacological effects and even toxicity of the displaced drugs.

(3) Flunixin meglumine is applied as an adjunctive therapy in combination with antibiotics for the management of agalactia syndrome in sows.

[Indications] This drug is an antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory agent, indicated for the treatment of febrile and inflammatory conditions, muscle pain, and soft tissue pain in livestock and small animals.​

[Dosage and Administration] Intramuscular and intravenous injection: 0.4 mL per 10 kg body weight per dose for beef cattle and pigs; 0.2~0.4 mL per 10 kg body weight per dose for dogs and cats; with once or twice a day for no more than 5 consecutive days.

[Adverse Reactions] Intramuscular injection causes tissue irritation at the injection site. Prolonged or high-dose administration of this drug may lead to gastric ulcers and renal injury in animals.

[Precautions] Use with caution in livestock with digestive ulcers.

[Withdrawal Period] 28 days for cattle and pigs.
