Honduras Launches Shrimp Export Plan to China, Targeting Over 100 Containers by Year-End

Program Launch and Goals

The "2026 Honduras Shrimp Export Plan to China" (Programa de Exportacion de Camaron Hondureno a China 2026) was officially launched on September 24, 2026, in San Lorenzo, Valle Department, Honduras. The plan aims to expand Honduras's shrimp market share in China and strives to export more than 100 containers of shrimp to China by the end of this year.

According to Honduras's Tribuna newspaper, representatives of Honduran aquaculture enterprises and Chinese delegates attended the launch ceremony. The first phase of the plan targets exporting 1.2 million kilograms of shrimp to China, equivalent to approximately 60 containers, sourced primarily from southern Honduras. Subsequent phases are expected to involve more shrimp production and distribution enterprises to further increase export volumes.

Economic Impact and Timeline

Honduran industry leaders predict that exports exceeding 100 containers will generate over 350 million Lempira in foreign exchange revenue. Additionally, the Southern Small and Medium Aquaculture Producers Association (APEMASUR) will collaborate with other enterprises to begin direct shipments to China starting in October.

Chinese representatives noted that Honduras has already exported over 500 tons of shrimp to China this year, and the Honduran side is preparing to increase export efforts in the fourth quarter, aiming for a full-year target of approximately 2,000 tons.

Diversifying Export Markets

While growing its shrimp exports to China, Honduras is also seeking to diversify export markets for this important aquaculture product. Data from the Honduran Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock shows that as of the end of May this year, the country had exported 29 million pounds of shrimp, generating approximately USD 113 million in foreign exchange, with European countries and Mexico remaining the primary export markets.

Free Trade Agreement Benefits

It is worth noting that the early harvest arrangement of the free trade agreement signed between Honduras and China has created favorable conditions for Honduran shrimp exports to China. Under the agreement, China provides zero-tariff treatment for Honduran shrimp. Looking ahead to 2027, Honduran shrimp producers and trading enterprises plan to expand production capacity and improve logistics capabilities to drive further growth in exports to China.

However, the new plan also acknowledges challenges. Multiple reports published this year indicate that production costs, international market prices, and supply capacity continue to hinder the growth of Honduras's shrimp exports to China. The industry is actively working to address these issues to fully capitalize on the opportunities presented by the Chinese market.
