Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a group of essential fat-soluble compounds, with alpha-tocopherol​ being the most biologically active form for animals. It serves as the body's primary lipid-soluble antioxidant. Unlike most vitamins, Vitamin E's core function is not enzymatic but protective: it safeguards critical cell membrane components, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), from oxidative damage caused by free radicals.

Vitamin E is indispensable in modern animal nutrition, especially in high-performance diets rich in easily oxidized fats. It is crucial for:

• Reproductive Health:​ Often called the "anti-sterility vitamin," it is vital for fertility, embryonic development, and viability in newborn animals.
• Muscle Integrity:​ It prevents Nutritional Muscular Dystrophy (NMD), particularly in young ruminants, poultry, and swine, by protecting muscle cell membranes.
• Immune Function:​ It enhances both humoral and cell-mediated immunity, helping animals mount a more effective defense against pathogens.
• Product Quality:​ In livestock, it improves meat color and shelf-life stability by reducing lipid oxidation. In poultry, it is transferred to eggs, enhancing their nutritional value.

Since animals cannot synthesize Vitamin E, it must be supplied through feed. Its requirement increases significantly with dietary PUFA levels, the presence of pro-oxidants​ (e.g., trace minerals, rancid fat), and during periods of physiological stress​ (e.g., disease, vaccination, heat).
