Vitamin E

1. Product Overview
Vitamin E refers to a group of eight naturally occurring compounds, including four tocopherols and four tocotrienols, with alpha-tocopherol having the highest biological activity. It is a potent fat-soluble antioxidant that protects the unsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes from free radical attack. It is crucial for maintaining cellular integrity, delaying aging, and supporting immune and neurological functions.

2. Key Characteristics & Functions

  • Primary Antioxidant: Serves as the main fat-soluble antioxidant within cell membranes, neutralizing free radicals and preventing lipid peroxidation to protect cells from oxidative damage.

  • Reproductive Health: Historically and nominally significant for maintaining normal reproductive function in animals.

  • Cardiovascular Support: May support cardiovascular health by potentially inhibiting the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.

  • Immune Function Support: Particularly enhances immune function in the elderly.

  • Skin Care & Wound Healing: Due to its antioxidant properties, it is widely used in skincare to combat UV damage, delay skin aging, and promote wound repair.

3. Primary Sources & Applications

  • Natural Food Sources: Abundant in vegetable oils such as wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, soybean oil; as well as in nuts (almonds, hazelnuts), seeds, whole grains, leafy green vegetables, and fortified foods.

  • Dietary Supplements: Available as softgels, drops, or in multivitamin complexes. Common forms include Natural Vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol)Synthetic Vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopherol), and the more stable Vitamin E Acetate (tocopheryl acetate).

  • Food Industry Application: Used as a food additive (antioxidant) in vegetable oils, animal fats, baked goods, and infant formula to prevent rancidity and extend shelf life.

  • Cosmetics & Topical Pharmaceuticals: Extensively used in creams, serums, lip balms, sunscreens, and in topical ointments for scar treatment and dry skin.

4. Safety & Dosage

  • Recommended Intake: The Adequate Intake for Chinese adults is 14 mg of alpha-tocopherol equivalents per day.

  • Deficiency: Rare in humans, usually associated with fat malabsorption disorders, potentially leading to neurological symptoms and hemolytic anemia.

  • Tolerance & Toxicity: Compared to vitamins A and D, vitamin E has lower toxicity. However, long-term excessive intake from supplements (>1000 mg/day) may increase bleeding risk (due to its anticoagulant effect) and be associated with certain health risks. Obtaining it from a balanced diet is recommended, and supplementation should be approached with caution.
