Processing Technology & Key Steps

1. Cleaning and Conditioning

    

   Whole corn kernels are first cleaned to remove impurities such as dust, stones, and broken kernels. Then they are pre-conditioned to raise the initial moisture content to around 15–16%, preparing for subsequent steam treatment.
    
2. Steam Cooking

    

   The conditioned corn is transferred to a steam chest and treated with high-temperature, high-pressure steam (usually 105–120°C) for 20–60 minutes. This step increases the kernel moisture content to 18–22% and fully gelatinizes the starch—breaking the dense, crystalline structure of starch granules into an amorphous, easily digestible form.
    
3. Flaking Pressing

    

   The softened, steamed corn is immediately passed through a pair of heavy-duty smooth steel rollers. Under high pressure, the kernels are flattened into thin, uniform flakes with a thickness of 1–3 mm. The pressure further ruptures the corn’s cell walls, making starch, protein, and other nutrients more accessible to digestive enzymes.
    
4. Drying and Cooling (Optional)

    

   For long-term storage, the wet flakes are dried to reduce moisture content to 10–12%, then cooled to room temperature. This prevents mold growth and spoilage during storage and transportation.

Main Applications

1. Livestock Feed (Primary Application)

    

   It is a staple energy ingredient in beef cattle finishing diets, where it promotes rapid weight gain and improves meat quality. It is also widely used in dairy cow rations to boost milk yield and milk fat content, and in poultry and swine diets to enhance feed conversion rates and reduce feeding costs.
    
2. Human Food (Minor Application)

    

   Occasionally, it is used in breakfast cereals, granola bars, and gluten-free baked goods. It can also be ground into steam-flaked cornmeal for making tortillas, cornbread, and other traditional foods, offering a softer texture and better flavor than regular cornmeal.
    

Key Quality Control Indicators

• Flake thickness uniformity: Ensures consistent digestibility across batches.
• Starch gelatinization degree: Usually measured by iodine staining, with a target gelatinization rate of over 85%.
• Moisture content: Must be controlled within 10–12% for storage stability.
