Colistin Sulphate

Antibacterial mechanism: Sulfuric acid colistin can bind to free phosphate of cell membrane lipoproteins, reducing surface tension and increasing permeability of the cell membrane, leading to cytoplasmic efflux, while interfering with ribosome function, ultimately killing bacteria.

Antibacterial spectrum: It mainly has a strong killing effect on Gram negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Pasteurella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella, etc. It has little effect on Gram positive bacteria except for Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Clinical application:

Animal use: mainly used for the prevention and treatment of bacterial enteritis in poultry and livestock, such as piglet dysentery, chicken dysentery, duck infectious serositis, etc. It can also be used as a feed additive. Low dose use can improve the conversion rate and weight gain rate of young livestock feed, but its use is limited after antibiotic prohibition.

For human use: Oral administration can be used to treat Escherichia coli enteritis and bacterial dysentery resistant to other drugs, while topical application can be used to treat local infections of Pseudomonas aeruginosa caused by burns and trauma, as well as sensitive bacterial infections in the ears, eyes, and other areas.

Compatibility taboos: Sulfuric acid colistin should not be combined with soluble barbiturates and vitamin B12 to form a solution for use, nor should it be mixed with quinolones, streptomycin, and oxytetracycline.
