King Crab Supply Surge: Global Market May Face Oversupply

In early October, the first batch of live blue king crabs from Russia's new fishing season arrived at the Hunchun port, with daily arrivals steadily increasing. The red king crab seasons in the Far East and Barents Sea also fully launched at the end of September. Under the surge of concentrated arrivals, domestic king crab wholesale prices saw a rare decline during the National Day Golden Week. Wholesale prices dropped from approximately 210 yuan per jin (500g) to around 150 yuan per jin, equivalent to roughly 300 yuan per kilogram.
China is the largest export market for Russian king crabs. According to the Russian Shipowners Association (ASRF), citing China Customs data, Russia exported 24,600 tons of live crabs to China from January to July this year, a year-on-year increase of 17%, with export value growing 27% to USD 698.6 million. During the same period, frozen crab exports reached 3,800 tons, up 39% year-on-year, with export value doubling to USD 84 million.
This wave of arrivals stems from the simultaneous season openings across Russia's two main production areas. At the end of September, 13 Far East fishing vessels focused on live crab harvesting, with output almost entirely sold to Asian markets. Seven Barents Sea fishing vessels supplied live crabs mainly to China. The blue king crab season also started in late September, with the first batch of live crabs arriving in Hunchun before the National Day holiday, rapidly amplifying pre-holiday arrivals.
The US side is also ramping up supply. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) announced that the total quota for king crab and snow crab species for the 2026-27 season is 20,680 tons, a 65% increase from the previous season's 12,520 tons. The Bristol Bay red king crab quota increased from 1,216 tons to 1,547 tons, up approximately 27%, with the fishery opening on October 15. The Bering Sea Tanner crab quota surged from 5,103 tons to 14,560 tons, nearly triple the previous season. The snow crab quota decreased 45% to 2,313 tons, while the Aleutian Islands golden king crab quota rose 13% to 2,151 tons.
The North American frozen crab market is also under pressure. Crab market expert Les Hodges assessed that North America still holds considerable inventory, and with new Alaska shipments arriving, price declines are inevitable, with new arrivals priced even lower. He expects US king crab sales to gradually warm up during autumn and holidays, with another opportunity around the Super Bowl (February 14, 2027). However, converting consumer intent into actual sales requires sellers to proactively engage with foodservice channels and drive distribution through promotions. In a declining price environment, buyers will only purchase on demand with little willingness to stockpile.
The only contraction in global king crab supply comes from Norway. Norway's king crab quota was significantly reduced this year, with the research-recommended ceiling at 850 tons, ultimately set at approximately 900 tons. Due to suspended operations in some fishing areas during summer, US imports of Norwegian king crab in the first eight months totaled 260.4 tons, down 61% year-on-year, valued at USD 19.6 million, down 45%. Compounded by a stronger Norwegian krone and US tariff factors, Norwegian exporters are gradually reducing their dependence on the US market.
For domestic import and cold chain operators, the key metrics to monitor going forward are subsequent shipment rhythms, product size composition, and actual transaction prices, rather than holiday consumption expectations. If the Chinese market continues to weaken, Russian sellers will also face pressure and need to rearrange shipment timing and pricing.
